Guests:Wu JunjunJiangnan University, Professor

Outline

Raw material innovation is the foundational driver and ultimate source of end-product innovation, fueling blockbuster successes and industry leaders. Bioactive proteins offer broad functional, nutritional, and biological properties, making them critical in functional foods, skincare, medical devices, and aesthetic medicine. Currently, their primary source relies on animal tissue extraction; however, this approach involves complex purification processes, high costs, safety risks from potential viral or pathogen contamination, low yields, and inconsistent batch quality. Our research team pioneered a multidisciplinary integration of synthetic biology, computational bioinformatics, supramolecular chemistry, and nanotechnology to create SuperMolecular Elastin—the first ultra-powerful cell-repair protein. This breakthrough features a unique supramolecular helical structure with exposed active sites, delivering superior efficiency in promoting cell adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and tissue repair compared to all commercially available proteins. It is currently the only novel functional protein combining the key characteristics of hyaluronic acid, collagen, elastin, and mussel adhesive proteins. Notably, SuperMolecular Elastin forms injectable, strength-tunable fillers (up to 6 MPa) without toxic crosslinkers, offering dual tissue-filling and regenerative capabilities with zero potential toxicity. This positions it as a transformative solution for skincare, medical devices, hemostatic materials, and regenerative aesthetic treatments.

Guests:Shi AiminResearcher and Doctoral Supervisor at the Institute of Food Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences; Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of Comprehensive Utilization Technology for Grain and Oil Processing, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs; Chief Scientist of the Innovation Team on Plant Protein Structure and Function Regulation

Outline

Plant protein-based Pickering emulsions are colloidal systems stabilized by plant proteins and their modified particles. The key to constructing these emulsions lies in selecting and modifying plant protein particles to irreversibly adsorb at interfaces by tuning their wettability, size, and surface charge. Stability arises from the dense solid-like particle films formed at the interface, which provide superior physical and chemical stability through steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsion—far exceeding that of traditional emulsifiers. In innovative applications, this technology is widely used to reformulate liquid foods, encapsulate bioactive compounds, create low-fat food textures, develop stable emulsion beverages (such as fruit juices and plant milks), and design responsive delivery systems, offering powerful tools for developing healthier, clean-label, and functional future foods.

14:10-14:30 Report: From Plant to Microbial Cell Factories: Synthetic Biology Reshaping Biomanufacturing of Steviol Glycosides and Sweetness Proteins

Guests:Zhang Baoqi, Bai Kai Sheng (Shanghai) Biotechnology Co., Ltd., Deputy General Manager

Outline

As a core driver of modern biomanufacturing, microbial cell factories enable the efficient synthesis and production of ingredients for food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. In the sweetener sector, natural high-intensity sweeteners are emerging as a key alternative to sucrose and artificial sweeteners due to their zero-calorie content, non-cariogenic properties, and suitability for diabetic patients. Among these, plant-derived steviol glycosides (particularly Reb M, Reb M2, and Reb M9) and sweet proteins (such as thaumatin and brazzein) have gained significant attention for their high sweetness intensity and strong safety profiles. However, traditional plant extraction faces critical bottlenecks, including long cultivation cycles, low extraction efficiency, difficult impurity removal, and geographic limitations, making it unable to meet the surging global demand. The rise of synthetic biology offers a disruptive solution to this challenge. This report demonstrates how microbial cell factories can be leveraged to produce these natural sweeteners.

10:10-10:30 Report: Bio-based Polyester Core Monomer FDCA – How to Make It and Sell It

Guests:Guo Neng, Sairek, Founder and CEO

Outline

The surging global demand for high-quality, high-performance, and green low-carbon products is propelling the commercialization of 2.5-2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) toward a breakout growth phase. "Selling it" has become industry consensus. As the core monomer for bio-based polyester PEF, the key bottleneck in FDCA industrialization is "making it"—overcoming cost and achieving mass production are the two mountains that must be crossed.

Seric precisely targets industry pain points, achieving breakthroughs in both cost reduction and mass production through three key dimensions: raw material selection, process innovation, and economies of scale—establishing a unique core competitive advantage.

First, leverage the advantages of non-food raw materials. Using glucose as the starting carbon source ensures broad availability, compatibility with various non-food carbon sources, stable supply, and low costs, establishing a solid foundation for cost efficiency.

Second, our process energy efficiency advantage: a proprietary (non-grain) glucose technology route that leverages iterative optimization of the catalytic system and precise control of reaction conditions. This approach effectively reduces energy consumption and separation/purification costs while continuously improving overall conversion efficiency. FDCA performance leads the industry with a purity of up to 99.997%, a yellowness b* value as low as 0.17, and total acid concentration maintained below 5 ppm, fully meeting the most stringent high-end application requirements across downstream sectors.

Third, our scale-up manufacturing advantage: Our proprietary process route ensures stable engineering scale-up for continuous, industrial production. The resulting products demonstrate superior stability, cost-efficiency, and downstream compatibility. The process is highly compatible with existing PTA lines, enabling rapid retrofitting of underperforming PTA units to FDCA production. This approach revitalizes existing assets, significantly reduces new investment costs, and seamlessly integrates with current downstream systems to drive efficient industry iteration and upgrade.

Currently, Sairic has fully integrated the continuous production and purification process from (non-food) glucose to FDCA using its proprietary technology, comprehensively validating the feasibility and advanced nature of this technological pathway. Industrialization is accelerating rapidly: the world's first 10,000-ton-per-year flagship FDCA plant, starting from glucose with glucaric acid as an intermediate, has begun construction in Jiande, Hangzhou. This facility aims to set a global benchmark for cost-effective and scalable FDCA production.
