The biomanufacturing industry has long faced a stark reality: many breakthroughs in the lab rarely make it to production.
The biomanufacturing industry has long faced an awkward reality:Many breakthroughs happen in the lab, but few make it to production.
Academician Tan Tianwei of the Chinese Academy of Engineering noted that while many biomanufacturing technologies are mature in the lab, they often fail during pilot-scale-up: "Microbes thrive in small-scale tests but 'go on strike' in large fermentation tanks." Academician Zhao Guoping of the Chinese Academy of Sciences highlighted that lack of predictability remains a key challenge in synthetic biology. Bridging the "last mile" from lab to factory has become the core challenge for commercializing biomanufacturing.
AI is becoming the key tool to bridge this "last mile."
During industrial production, AI processes multi-source heterogeneous data from both online and offline sources to not only accurately predict the timing for feed addition and scale-up but also enable proactive anomaly detection—identifying future risk fluctuations while all indicators still appear "normal." Driven by reinforcement learning, process self-evolution is shifting manufacturing from "reliance on expert intuition" to "digital-driven evolution."
